Commission a TV show about books
by Alex Wheatle
Novels and books are just as important to the entertainment world as film, theatre, music and other arts so I would suggest a dedicated book review show. I’d like to see actors re-enact three or four minute excerpts from authors’ books. Interviewing writers in the locations where they have set their work would offer a backdrop of realism to viewers’ imaginations. It would be fascinating to go behind the scenes of a major publishing house as they prepare for a launch of an important novel. For reviews of Y/A or children books I would go into schools and youth clubs to gather feedback and honest opinion. It wouldn’t just be a talking head show but a fast-moving magazine programme that keeps the viewer up to date with the latest publishing trends and offers a fresh way of introducing books to the watching public. I would also like to present the show!

Why vote? We will feed in readers' favourite ideas to the government's consultation on the future of the BBC, and profile them heavily in the media. We believe the debate over the BBC's future is too narrow and focused on cuts - it's missing strong, positive ideas about what public broadcasting can and should be.
